Description
Zinc Chromate is a historically accurate yellow-green primer color widely used on U.S. military aircraft from the 1930s through the 1950s. This distinctive tone was applied to interior metal surfaces to prevent corrosion, particularly in wheel wells, fuselage interiors, bomb bays, and engine nacelles. Its vibrant hue became a standard in American aircraft manufacturing and is essential for achieving realism in scale aircraft modeling.

Color Description
Zinc Chromate is a bright yellow-green with a slightly acidic undertone, often associated with the protective coatings applied inside WWII aircraft. It falls between chartreuse and olive on the color spectrum and was used both as a primer and, at times, as a final interior finish. Its high visibility also helped maintenance crews spot cracks and corrosion on metal surfaces.
This color was widely used across U.S. aircraft manufacturing programs:
• Found in the interiors of B-17s, B-24s, P-47s, and P-51s
• Applied to wheel wells, access panels, internal bulkheads, and wing spars
• Used in both bare-metal and camouflaged aircraft designs
Modeling Uses
• Paint cockpit interiors, landing gear bays, and bomb bay walls in WW2 aircraft
• Use as a primer color under chipping and weathering effects
• Combine with Interior Green or Aluminum for layered depth and metallic realism
• Apply to internal surfaces of dioramas and cross-section aircraft builds
